Introducing Domain Mastery
Most domain owners register a name, point it to their website, and never think about it again — until something goes wrong. An expired domain, an unexpected renewal charge, or a failed transfer can be stressful when you don't understand what's happening behind the scenes.
That's why we've created Domain Mastery, a 12-part educational series in our Help Center that explains how the domain name system actually works — written for real people, not just registrar engineers.
What You'll Learn
The series is split into two parts:
The Domain Lifecycle (Articles 1–7) walks you through every phase a domain goes through, from the moment you register it to what happens if it expires:
- The Domain Lifecycle: From Registration to Expiration — The big picture
- Add Grace Period — The 5-day window after registration where you can cancel
- Renew Grace Period — What happens right after you renew
- Auto-Renew Grace Period — The critical window after expiration
- Transfer Grace Period — How transfers affect your timeline
- Redemption Grace Period — Your last chance to recover a deleted domain
- Pending Delete and Domain Drops — The final phase before a domain is gone
Extended Topics (Articles 8–12) cover the broader concepts every domain owner should know:
- Understanding Domain Status Codes — What those WHOIS statuses actually mean
- How Domain Transfers Work — The complete guide to moving your domain
- WHOIS, RDAP, and Domain Privacy — Who can see your registration data
- Premium and Reserved Domains — Why some domains cost more
- DNS and Nameservers Explained — How your domain connects to your website
Why We Built This
We believe informed customers make better decisions. Understanding grace periods can save you from losing a domain. Knowing how transfers work prevents delays. Recognizing status codes helps you troubleshoot issues on your own.
Every article is written in plain language with practical examples and clear tables — no RFC numbers or EPP XML required.
