Domain Registrar MCP Servers in 2026, Compared

Eight registrars and domain services now let an AI agent work with domains through MCP or an agent-facing API. Two years ago that list would have been empty. We spent a day reading every vendor's documentation, announcement posts, and llms.txt files to put the comparison below together, and the main thing we learned is that "supports MCP" can mean almost anything. For one vendor it means a single availability-check tool. For another it means an agent can register the domain, set up its DNS, order a server, and pay the invoice without leaving the conversation.

Everything here was checked in August 2026. Where a number is a vendor's own claim rather than something we could test ourselves, we say so.

What is an MCP registrar server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets AI applications call external tools. A registrar that runs an MCP server hands an agent a menu of named operations - check this domain, register it, create this DNS record - so nobody has to reverse-engineer a REST manual first. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and the open-source personal agents like OpenClaw and Hermes Agent all speak it. A table flattens things, so a few notes from the reading.

Almost nobody covers the whole lifecycle. Availability checking is everywhere, it's the demo everyone builds first. Registration over MCP is less common. Renewals, transfers, contact updates - the unglamorous operations that decide whether you still own the name in five years - are rare. An agent that can buy a domain but can't renew it has automated the fun day and left you all the boring ones.

The deep connectors come from opposite ends of the market, which surprised us a little. name.com arrived from the retail side first, in July 2025, putting a large registrar catalog behind MCP and an OpenAPI spec. The newer agent-first services went the other way. AIvikings, for example, exposes eight tools and says in its own materials that the small surface is deliberate. Fair enough. A small surface is easy to audit and easy to trust. The trouble starts with the first request that falls outside it, because an agent mid-task doesn't file a feature request, it just fails.

Then there's the question of what happens after the domain exists. A domain usually points at something, and in nearly every setup on this list the something lives at a second provider, with separate credentials and a separate integration for the agent to learn. Ours is the exception, as far as we know: the same authenticated session that registers the domain can order the VPS, deploy the application, and move the nameservers over. How do agents pay, and what stops them overspending?

This is where implementations differ most, and it's worth asking about before you connect anything to a real account. The wider agentic-commerce picture (card networks, OpenAI's Instant Checkout, Google's AP2) is in The Scoreboard. For registrars specifically it comes down to an authenticated account, a payment method on file, and whatever guardrails the registrar thought to build before opening the door.

We built two. Every quote an agent gets from us is the number the invoice will show, with the base price, the $0.20/yr ICANN fee on gTLDs, and payment processing at 3% or $0.30 minimum all itemized, so the agent and the person behind it are looking at the same figure. And nothing gets bought until someone approves it. Purchases and other hard-to-reverse actions are staged behind a confirmation step called executeConfirmedAction, which the agent can't skip and can't answer on its own. We're among the first registrars selling to agents at all, and that gate is what made us comfortable turning the feature on.

Which one should you connect?

Start from where your domains already live. If your registrar is on the list, connect its server and find the edges of its tool surface before you consider moving anything. If the agent is only doing name research, the lookup-only servers cost nothing and commit you to nothing. And if you want the agent to own the whole job - name, DNS, server, app, renewal, invoice - then you need a server that covers the whole job, and as of this writing very few do.

Is it safe to give an AI agent access to my registrar account?

It is as safe as the registrar's authentication and approval model. Look for authenticated sessions rather than long-lived shared keys, scoped access, an explicit confirmation gate on purchases and destructive actions, and an audit trail of what the agent did.
