Renew Grace Period: 5 Days After Renewal
Renew Grace Period: 5 Days After Renewal
Part 3 of 12 in the Domain Mastery series — Previous: Add Grace Period
The Renew Grace Period is a 5-day window that begins immediately after you explicitly renew a domain. If the renewal was a mistake, the domain can be deleted during this period and the renewal fee is refunded.
What Triggers It?
This grace period applies only to explicit renewals — when you (or your registrar) actively choose to renew the domain. It does not apply to:
- Auto-renewals at expiration — Those trigger the Auto-Renew Grace Period instead
- Transfers — Those trigger the Transfer Grace Period
How It Works
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Duration | 5 calendar days from the renewal |
| Domain active? | Yes |
| Can you cancel? | Yes — renewal fee refunded |
| Can you transfer? | Yes |
| Cancellation result | Domain enters Redemption Period |
What Gets Refunded?
Only the renewal fee is refunded. If the domain was previously registered or renewed, those earlier fees are not affected.
Example:
| Event | Fee | Refundable During Renew GP? |
|---|---|---|
| Original registration (6 months ago) | Paid | No |
| Renewal just now (+1 year) | Paid | Yes |
| Cancel within 5 days | — | Renewal fee refunded |
Key Difference: Cancel vs. Add Grace Period
When a domain is cancelled during the Add Grace Period (after initial registration), it becomes immediately available for anyone. But when cancelled during the Renew Grace Period, the domain enters the Redemption Period — a 30-day holding phase where it can only be restored with an additional fee.
Common Scenarios
Accidental renewal: You renewed a domain you intended to let expire. Within 5 days, you can cancel and get the renewal fee back. The domain will then enter Redemption Period.
Wrong domain renewed: You renewed the wrong domain in your portfolio. Cancel within 5 days, get the credit, and renew the correct one.
Want to extend further: You renewed for 1 year but now want 5 years total. No need to cancel — simply renew again for additional years (up to 10 years maximum).
Grace Period Overlap
If you renew a domain that is already in another grace period, both periods run simultaneously. For example:
- Renew during Add Grace Period — Both registration and renewal fees are refundable if cancelled
- Renew during Auto-Renew Grace Period — The explicit renewal typically ends the auto-renew period, and the Renew Grace Period begins
Tips
- Confirm your intent before renewing — check you have the right domain and the right period
- If you renew by mistake, contact support within 5 days
- You can always add more years later without cancelling first
